North Korea on Saturday vehemently shot back at a comment made by a top US official on East Asia.

In a statement from the Foreign Ministry, reported by the Korea Central News Agency on Saturday evening, Pyongyang called Assistant US Secretary of State Daniel Russel's comment "hurting the dignity" of its leader and threatened to pay it back.

Previously, Russel told US defense reporters "Put yourself in Kim Jong-un's place. That is not a good place to be. Perhaps he's got an enhanced capacity to conduct a nuclear attack and then immediately die. But that can't be Plan A," according to an AP report.

On that comment, Pyongyang hit back, saying, "The US hostile acts of hurting the dignity of the supreme leadership of the DPRK have now reached the point of self-contradiction, going far beyond the tolerance limit."

DPRK is an abbreviation for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, North Korea's official name.

"The US will have to pay a high price for malignantly hurting the dignity of the supreme leadership of the DPRK, and Obama will come to understand the meaning of the price before he leaves the White House," it threatened. (Yonhap)
