[THE INVESTOR] The national archery team that swept the 2016 Rio Olympics was rewarded with a total of 2.5 billion won (US$2.23 million), the highest amount in the history, Korea Archery Association and Hyundai Motor Group announced on Sept. 1.

The South Korean archers won gold medals in all four categories at the Rio Games, the first in Olympics’ history, and the six athletes -- including Chang Hye-jin, Ku Bon-chan and Ki Bo-bae -- and coaching staff were granted prize money. 

As the chairman of the national archery governing body, Hyundai Motor Group Vice Chairman Chung Eui-sun delivered the prize at a ceremony held on Sept. 1 in southern Seoul.

His father Chung Mong-koo has been serving as a chairman of the Korea Archery Association since 1985, and after four terms as an honorary chairman for the association the vice chairman has been heading the body since 2005.

Over the past 32 years, Chungs have supported archery through the association investing over 45 billion won in the sport. For the 2016 Olympics, Eui-sun flew to Rio, cheering the archery team in person while providing an armored vehicle equipped with lounging area, and a temporary restaurant offering South Korean meals.
