[THE INVESTOR] Kia Motors said on Sept. 1 that its global sales spiked 12.2 percent from a year earlier in August.

The automaker’s global sales came to 219,925 cars in August, compared with 196,032 cars sold in the same month last year, the company said in a regulatory filing.

Domestic sales plunged 10.4 percent on-year to 37,403 vehicles as labor strikes and a reduction in the number of working days during the holiday season led to a sharp drop in output, it said.

Overseas sales, on the other hand, spiked 18.3 percent on-year to 182,522 cars.

The automaker said its overseas production surged 56.7 percent on-year in August, more than offsetting a 23.4 percent drop in domestic output.

In the first eight months of the year, the carmaker sold 1,906,567 cars globally, down 2.7 percent from the same period last year. Domestic sales grew 7.7 percent to 358,160 over the cited period, but overseas sales slipped 4.8 percent on-year to 1,548,407.
