Korea’s leading canned fisheries producer Dongwon Group is running various education-related projects to support children and students who will lead Korea in the future, the firm said Thursday.

Living up to its vision of giving back to the community, the conglomerate provides one free children’s book a month for a year to recipients who are 6-years-old or younger, the company said.

The project was started in 2007, based on group Chairman Kim Jae-chul’s belief that “In order for Korea to become a developed country, our children must develop a habit of reading.”

According to Dongwon, it annually invests some 1 billion won ($8.94 million) in the program and has handed out more than 1.1 million books so far.

Since 2012, the firm has also managed a program every July named “Dongwon Global Explorer,” which encourages university students to widen their view of the world by funding two-week backpacking trips.

“Through the backpacking experience we hope to foster students to achieve success on the global stage,” said Judy Choi, director of the Dongwon Education Foundation.

Along with the mentioned projects, the company offers grants for selected universities and research institutes and more.
