A memorandum of understanding for such cooperation was signed Wednesday between the ministry and the local portal operator, which boasts of over 10 million daily visitors.

Naver and many others alike already offer such services, but the real-time information from the state-run center will allow it to provide the most up to date traffic information.

"The government will continue to expand its cooperation with private firms to develop and provide better traffic information services to the people," the ministry said in a press release.

Under the agreement signed at Naver headquarters in Seongnam, just south of Seoul, the government will provide traffic information free of charge for the next three years.

In return, the portal operator will help promote transportation safety and government steps aimed at such a goal, they said. (Yonhap)
