South Korean chip giant Samsung Electronics Co. garnered an all-time high presence in the global mobile DRAM market in the second quarter, data showed Wednesday, apparently helped by increased orders from smartphone makers, in particular, Chinese players.

According to the data compiled by industry tracker DRAMeXchange, Samsung Electronics took up 61.5 percent of the mobile DRAM market in the April-June period, up 1.1 percentage points from the previous quarter.

Samsung sold $2.42 billion worth of mobile DRAM in the second quarter, also up 19.4 percent from three months earlier, the data showed.

Another South Korean chipmaker, SK hynix Inc., followed with a market share of 25.1 percent in the second quarter with sales of $988 million, trailed by Micron with 11.4 percent.

The data showed that the global mobile DRAM revenue grew 17.2 percent in the second quarter, benefiting all top three DRAM suppliers. Expanding Chinese branded smartphone shipments, driven by Huawei, OPPO and Vivo, as well as bit supply growth in the mobile DRAM market, attributed to the revenue increase, DRAMeXchange said.

At the same time, smartphone shipments from Chinese brands are expected to keep growing, and the third quarter also heralds the arrival of the traditional peak season, it said. (Yonhap)
