[THE INVESTOR] About six in 10 South Koreans use two or more mobile messaging apps, with KakaoTalk standing as the most-used chat service, a survey showed on Aug. 12.

According to the survey of 279 people aged between 19 and 59, conducted by market researcher DMC Media, 64.1 percent of respondents said they use two or more mobile messaging apps.

The survey found that 35.8 percent use one messaging app, 38.8 percent use two, 16.8 percent use three and 8.6 percent use more than four.

Asked why they use multiple messaging apps, 59.4 percent of respondents said they do so to chat with people who use different apps.

KakaoTalk was used by 94.3 percent of respondents, followed by Nateon with 19 percent, Facebook Messenger with 15.1 percent and Line with 12.2 percent.

As most people use messaging apps to chat, the use of traditional SMS-based texting is on the fall. Only 6.8 percent of respondents said they use traditional SMS texting.
