The ruling Saenuri Party’s floor leader and fellow party members visited Seongju, North Gyeongsang Province, Tuesday to soothe the area’s vehement opposition to the government’s decision to deploy a U.S. missile defense system there.

Rep. Chung Jin-suk pledged to act as a bridge between residents and the government, and to take all necessary measures including holding a hearing on the matter.

“We must immediately establish a consultation body that includes the residents, the U.S. military and the Saenuri Party, to solve this issue,” Chung said during his visit.

Scores of placards were hung across the county to denounce the government’s decision to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system there. Despite the government’s persuasion, concerns over THAAD’s impact on health and environment remain high among locals. The residents have also been questioning the decision process of the deployment.

The region, a traditional voter stronghold for the conservative party, has shown rapidly dropping support ratings for President Park Geun-hye and the ruling camp since the decision earlier this month.

Upon Chung’s visit, some residents briefly blocked the entrance to the district office and carried out a performance enacting a “funeral of the Saenuri Party,” implying that their loyalty to it has died.

Chung in response said, “No matter how important the country’s security may be, (the government) cannot unilaterally force the Seongju region (to accept it) if it turns out to inflict clear damages to the residents’ health or the region’s environment, as well as any economic burden.”

Prior to visiting the district office, Chung and his team had also visited the nearby Seongsan artillery unit that has several MIM-23 Hawk surface-to-air homing missiles.

“Even though the Hawk missile also comes with the radar which also emanates electromagnetic waves, there are no problem as of now,” Chung said.

Despite his visit to the region, the residents continued to demand the withdrawal of the deploymentdecision.
