Ford Sales & Service Korea Inc., the local importer and distributor of the U.S. car brand, will recall 948 units of Mustang sports car for problems with their airbags as part of the company's worldwide recall plan, the South Korean transport ministry said Wednesday.

The models' airbags, produced by Japan's Takata Corp., were found to have a problem in the inflator unit, which can send metal fragments flying and injure vehicle occupants in case of a crash, said the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The problem has been detected in 948 Mustang muscle cars produced between April 6, 2004, and Jan. 10, 2012.

Free replacement services will be available starting on July 15 at the company's service centers throughout the country, the ministry added.

The Takata air bag problems have forced global carmakers, including Toyota Motor Corp., BMW and Honda, to recall millions of their vehicles around the world.

The ministry also said a combined 591 units of Peugeot sedans, including the Nouvelle Peugeot 207CC, imported by Hanbul Motors Corp., will be recalled due to errors in operation of the seat heating, which could lead to a fire.

The owners of the vehicles manufactured between Feb. 12, 2007, and Oct. 23, 2008, can receive free repairs from the company's garages starting on Wednesday. (Yonhap)
