Sales of vehicles made by Hyundai Motor Co. and its smaller affiliate Kia Motors Corp. have nearly quadrupled in Mexico in the first half of 2016 compared with a year ago, industry data showed Wednesday.

The two Korean carmakers sold a combined 40,264 units in Mexico in the first six months of the year, compared with 11,004 from a year earlier, data compiled by the Mexican Automotive Industry Association showed.

Kia Motors has shown a strong performance since entering the Mexican market in July 2015, and has operated a local factory that produces the K3 compact sedan since May.

Kia Motors sold 23,496 units in the first half to account for 3.3 percent of the market, taking ninth place.

Hyundai Motor's first half sales also jumped 52.4 percent on-year to 16,768 units, taking up 2.3 percent of the Mexican market, data noted. (Yonhap)
