[THE INVESTOR] Renault Samsung Motors confirmed that the carmaker’s best-selling compact sport utility vehicle QM3 would not be manufactured in Korea.

“The SUV will continue to be imported from Spain,”Park Dong-hoon, Renault Samsung’s chief executive told The Herald Business on June 24. “Producing the QM3 in Korea would lead to an unavoidable rise in its price due to the increase in related costs, such as labor expenses.”

Park was directly addressing the growing speculation that the automaker is considering moving the production of the QM3 to Korea. The carmaker’s latest model QM6, however, will be manufactured at its Busan plant.

Industry watchers had said Renault-Nissan may be considering such moves to help ramp up production capacity.

For two years from its launch in December 2013, more than 40,000 QM3 vehicles were sold in Korea. Renault Samsung became the first carmaker to sell over 40,000 imported units of a single model.
