The suspect in the Mount Sapaesan murder case has admitted he had intended to rape the victim, Uijeongbu police said Tuesday.

The suspect, a 45-year-old man surnamed Jeong, had previously been indicted under charges of robbery and murder.

The police continued their investigation to discern whether Jeong had also attempted sexual assault, as the victim, a 55-year-old lone female hiker, had been found partly naked.

Jeong initially insisted that he had only been after money, and that he had not realized the victim had died from his strangling. He said he undressed the victim to prevent her from chasing him.

However, after further police interrogation involving a lie detector, analysis of his telephone records and an extensive search of the crime scene, Jeong confessed to having attempted sexual assault.

Jeong’s claims that “When the victim stopped moving I ran, pulling her clothes off partly to keep her from chasing me,” and that “The brassiere became unhooked when I was pulling up her top,” all came out false in lie detector test.

Jeong’s telephone had a built-up record of obscene material searches.

Jeong admitted to approaching to rape and rob her, but that he ran with the money, without completing the sexual assault, once she stopped moving after he strangled and hit her on the head.

The police will file additional charges of attempted rape against Jeong.
