The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Wednesday it will provide up to 180 million won ($151,200) worth of subsidies for the renovation of traditional houses, in line with its bid to preserve traditional buildings remaining in the city.
The announcement came as Seoul designated 550,000 square meters of area in five districts, including Bukchon and Seochon, two of the oldest neighborhoods in the capital, as special zones for the conservation of hanok, or traditional-style housing.
The houses in the zone are obligated to maintain their traditional looks, including heights. In return, the city will compensate for up to 50 percent of renovation costs.
"Hanok are important construction heritages vital for the preservation of housing diversity and the identity of Seoul as a city of history and culture," the city government said, adding it will continue to roll out policies to preserve such homes.
Seoul said a single house can receive up to 180 million won in compensation. The subsidies provided to other hanok outside the zone are limited to 120 million won.
Newly built hanok in the special zones will also receive a maximum 150 million won worth of support from the city.
The city government said it has designated nine separate zones, and plans to ease construction regulations so more people can build hanok in these neighborhoods. As an additional favor, such homes will be exempt from securing a mandatory parking space. (Yonhap)
