South Korea's top mobile carrier SK Telecom Co. became the inaugural chair of the Telecom Infra Project (TIP), a global union of companies studying fifth-generation (5G) network technologies, the company said Sunday.

SK Telecom said TIP has named Choi Jin-sung, its chief technology officer, as the first chairman of the organization.

Led by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, TIP is an organization that studies deeper into the 5G network technology. Along with SK Telecom, the members also include Germany-based Deutsche Telekom AG and Nokia Corp.

The organization is made up of 43 firms, with SK Telecom being the only South Korean member.

"We aim to lead the global 5G industry through continuative cooperation with leaders of information and communication technologies, including Facebook," Choi said.

SK Telecom plans to invite high-ranking officials from TIP members next month and share ideas on cooperation with 5G network technologies.

The South Korean firm has been struggling to take the lead in one of the industry's most-watched segments. In March, SK Telecom also joined forces with Samsung Electronics Co., the world's No. 1 smartphone maker, to test the headway made in their 5G network technologies. (Yonhap)
