Audi Volkswagen Korea, the local unit of the German carmaker Volkswagen, will recall 2,473 Touareg sports utility vehicles for a defect in their brake pedals, the Korean transport ministry said Tuesday.

A clip may have become dislodged from the pedal bracket, which could lead to a malfunction in the braking system while driving, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The problem has been detected in 2,473 Touareg TDI SUVs produced between Feb. 10, 2011 and Jan. 19, 2016.

Porsche, a high-performance sports car brand of the Volkswagen Group, also announced a recall of some 5,000 units of its Cayenne SUVs earlier this month for the same problems.

Meanwhile, the ministry said 50,648 cars equipped with troublesome airbags produced by Japan's Takata have been imported to Korea so far.

The airbag was found to have a problem in the inflater unit which can cause it to send metal fragments flying and injure vehicle occupants in a crash.

Global carmakers, including Toyota Motor and BMW AG, have announced worldwide plans to recall their vehicles to replace the airbags.

In Korea, 38,228 units, or 75 percent, of the affected models are already under recall, with the remaining 25 percent to be scheduled later due to a shortage in the supply of parts, according to the ministry. (Yonhap)
