South Korea warned North Korea to stop slandering President Park Geun-hye on Friday after the communist country lashed out at her calls for more sanctions during her recent visit to Washington.

North Korea's unification committee, which deals with inter-Korean affairs, said in a statement a day earlier that Park's actions will hasten her death, warning that the North is aiming for her presidential office, Cheong Wa Dae.

The statement also called Park "a goblin" and "a demon of the era" who spoiled inter-Korean relations.

"We strongly denounce North Korea for slandering our head of state again with such unutterable invectives and pledging further development of nuclear weapons and missiles," South Korea's Unification Ministry said in a written statement.

South Korea warns the North "to immediately stop this kind of unfounded threats and slandering and to keep in mind that its nuclear and missile arsenal will not guarantee its survival," the statement said.

Despite North Korea's resistance, South Korea will continue to make every effort to push more stringent and binding sanctions on the North in its pursuit of disarming the country, it also said.

Park returned home on Wednesday from a two-nation tour to the U.S. and Mexico where she called for efforts to enforce the latest sanctions on Pyongyang adopted by the United Nations Security Council following its nuclear and long-range missile tests earlier this year. (Yonhap)
