Police on Friday arrested a man on suspicion of running an illegal gambling website for overseas horse, dog and chariot racing.

The Ulsan Regional Police Agency said the 31-year-old man has operated the website since February 2014 on a server based in Singapore. The site allows users access to on-the-spot broadcasts of races in South Africa, Macao and Japan.

According to the police, he had taken 2 to 5 percent of the money deposited by customers after obtaining a local license from its overseas operator for 5 million won ($4,306).

A minimum 900 million won in bets had been made through the site, with more than 60 customers lured to it, the police said.

Another man, 21, was booked over his alleged role in promoting the site on major social network services in a bid to attract the attention of a larger customer base.

The police are looking into whether more people are involved in the site's promotion. (Yonhap)
