Smsung Electronics accounted for 68 percent of the global curved-monitor market in the fourth quarter last year, data showed Monday, amid the soaring demand from Internet cafes in China.

According to the data compiled by Taiwan-based industry tracker WitsView, the Korean tech giant stood as the dominant leader in the segment over the October-December period, trailed by China's HKC and U.S. Dell with 14 percent and 6 percent, respectively.

LG Electronics, Samsung's smaller Korean rival, managed to take up 4 percent over the cited period.

While the shipment of curved monitors around the globe reached 900,000 units last year, the figure is expected to double to 1.8 million units in 2016, WitsView added. The previous estimate hovered around 1.5 million units.

WitsView added the demand for curved monitors is especially high among China's Internet cafes due to their unique design.

"Sales of curved-screen monitors have been exceptionally strong in China recently because their releases coincided with a boom in the country's Internet cafes," WitsView said. "These venues are driving the demand for large-size monitors with novel designs, so curved-screen products fit right into this market." (Yonhap)
