South Korean rhythmic gymnast Son Yeon-jae established a personal best in the individual all-around at an International Federation of Gymnastics competition in Italy on Saturday but failed to grab a medal.

Son earned a career-high 73.900 points in total from hoop, ball, clubs and ribbon over two days at the season's third FIG World Cup in Pesaro, Italy. This was 0.350 points higher than her previous best score at the FIG World Cup in Espoo, Finland, in February.

Son was fourth after the hoop and ball programs Friday. She received 18.400 points in clubs and 18.450 points in ribbon on Saturday but failed to go up from fourth place in the individual all-around.

Yana Kudryavtseva of Russia, a three-time world all-around champion, won the gold medal with 76.450 points, while her compatriot Margarita Mamun, a two-time world all-around silver medalist, took silver with 75.900 points. Both Russians, who are also considered the top two favorites to win the gold medal in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, were making their first World Cup appearances this season. Ganna Rizatdinova of Ukraine finished third with 74.550 points.

Son, however, has reached all four apparatus finals, open to the top eight gymnasts in each category. She will perform later Sunday. The 21-year-old, who finished fifth in the individual all-around at the 2012 London Games, has taken home at least one medal at the previous two World Cups this season. (Yonhap)
