South Korea's air passenger traffic jumped 15.3 percent in February from a year earlier on an increase in domestic and international travelers amid reduced fuel costs, government data showed Tuesday.

The number of people entering and leaving the country by plane reached 8.13 million last month, up from 7.05 million tallied a year ago, according to the data from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

Outbound travelers rose 15.7 percent on-year to 5.85 million, with inbound air passengers gaining 14.6 percent to 2.28 million over the cited period.

"The sharp gain in air passengers is backed by expanded routes offered by budget carriers, low travel costs stemming from falling oil prices and the rising demand for overseas trips," the ministry said

The number of people on South Korea-Japan routes soared 30.5 percent to 1.28 million last month from a year earlier thanks to a weak Japanese currency, while flights between South Korea and Southeast Asia carried 2.16 million people, up 14.8 percent from a year ago.

Passengers who flew Korea-China routes last month climbed 6.9 percent to 1.47 million, the ministry added.

The findings also showed that air cargo, both international and domestic, fell 2.2 percent to 290,000 tons in February due mainly to the country's sluggish outbound shipments.

South Korea's exports posted a 12.2 percent on-year drop in February for the 14th straight month, marking the longest negative growth in history.

The ministry expects air passenger traffic to slow down in March as the latest terrorist attack in Brussels and other geopolitical issues bring down the number of international travelers. (Yonhap)
