GM Korea, the local unit of U.S. carmaker General Motors, said Monday that it has sold more than 10,000 units of the Impala here in the six-month period since its debut last year.

From its launch in September until January, the Impala's cumulative sales stood at 9,719 units. Then, in the middle of last month, they exceeded the 10,000 mark, according to the company.

GM Korea unveiled the Impala with an aim to take over Hyundai Motor's Grandeur, the leader in the large-size sedan segment.

It came closer to taking the status of the Grandeur late last year, but slid to third with the launch of Kia Motors Corp.'s all-new K7 earlier this year.

As GM Korea imports all of the Impalas from a U.S. plant run by General Motors, some are raising the need for local production to meet such strong demand in a timely manner.

GM Korea CEO James Kim recently told reporters that he is looking into the matter, but noted that it is a very "important" and "tough" decision that needs more time to make. (Yonhap)
