North Korean leader Kim Jong-un ordered the construction of another street in Pyongyang for scientists, the country's state media reported Friday.

Kim made the declaration during his inspection of the construction of "Ryomyong Street" in the area between the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun and Ryonghung crossroads in the capital city, according to the report by the North's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The KCNA dispatch did not give details about the date of his visit.

He gave instructions to build the street into a "monumental edifice strikingly displaying the Workers' Party of Korea's idea of attaching importance to science and talents and to highlight the might of socialist Korea."

Last November, North Korea completed the construction of the Mirae Scientists Street along the Taedong River in the North's capital which has a modern housing complex and service facilities for scientists.

Noting that the construction of Ryomyong Street is a fierce battle with the U.S. imperialists and their followers, Kim called for the construction to be completed within this year to demonstrate the "might of the DPRK fighting its way out with conviction in the rosy future and the traditions of ever-victorious Juche (self-reliance) Korea."

The DPRK stands for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the North's official name.

The street will have apartment buildings for scientists and researchers including those working at Kim Il Sung University. It will also have a nursery, kindergarten, laundry, post office and other public buildings and public service amenities, according to the news agency.

"The intention is to turn Ryomyong Street into an energy-saving and green street of the 21st century," Kim said, adding that the design and construction should ensure the lighting and heating systems for the houses and public buildings are powered by solar panels, geothermal energy and natural lighting.

Saying that he would dispatch the solider-builders who took part in the construction of Mirae Scientists Street to the construction of Ryomyong Street, Kim instructed that the entire ruling party, state and society should render all necessary assistance to the construction.

"The construction of the street serves as a political occasion of clearly showing the spirit of the DPRK standing up and keeping up with the world, despite all sorts of sanctions and pressure by the U.S. imperialists and their followers," Kim said. (Yonhap)
