South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se held a telephone discussion with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and they agreed to fully implement new U.N. sanctions on North Korea, China's foreign ministry said, as the North's leader threatens to conduct a nuclear warhead test.

In the telephone discussion held on Monday, Yun and Wang exchanged views on the latest situation on the Korean Peninsula, the Chinese ministry said in a statement.

The two ministers agreed that the new U.N. sanctions, slapped on North Korea following its fourth nuclear test and rocket launch this year, should be implemented in a full and comprehensive manner.

The sanctions include the mandatory inspection of all cargo going in and out of the North and a ban on the country's exports of coal and other mineral resources that serve as a key source of hard currency for the cash-strapped regime.

They also agreed to work together on exploring ways to resume talks with North Korea, according to the statement.

South Korea's Foreign Ministry added that the two ministers assessed their "close coordination" ahead of the U.N. Security Council's adoption of the resolution earlier this month.

"Minister Yun stressed that in the current situation where North Korea completely rejects the Security Council resolution and continues to make threats of provocations, there should be more focus than ever on strictly implementing the sanctions," it said in a separate statement.

The two sides also noted that bilateral ties are drawing closer together through robust dialogue, and they expressed hope for even stronger relations through mutual visits by officials, including their chief envoys to the six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear program.

Since the U.N. Security Council adopted new sanctions on North Korea, Pyongyang has issued threats of a nuclear strike on nearly a daily basis.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un ordered his country to soon conduct a nuclear warhead test and test-launch ballistic missiles, the North's official news agency said on Tuesday, stepping up its warlike rhetoric. (Yonhap)
