The United States is closely monitoring the situation on the Korean Peninsula, the Defense Department said Thursday, after North Korea fired two short-range missiles into the East Sea.
"We have seen the reports. We are closely monitoring the situation," Cmdr. Bill Urban, a Pentagon spokesman, told Yonhap News Agency without elaborating.
According to South Korea's Joint Chief of Staff, the two missiles were fired around 5:20 a.m. Thursday morning from North Hwanghae Province and hit waters northeast of the port city of Wonsan.
The missiles flew some 500 kilometers, sources said.
The firings are the latest in a series of provocative statements and acts the North has engaged in as South Korea and the U.S. have been conducting annual joint military exercises Pyongyang has long branded as a rehearsal for invasion. (Yonhap)
