Korea has developed a high-accuracy global positioning system (GPS) with a 1 meter maximum error tolerance to be used for commercial transportation, the first of its kind in the world, the government announced Tuesday.
The new system has enhanced accuracy with a normal error range of 20-90 centimeters. The maximum error tolerance is 1.5 meters, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
The Global Navigation Satellite System currently used in civilian vehicles or smartphones, has an error tolerance of 15-30 meters.
It can't be used with self-driving cars or a next-generation Cooperative Intelligent Transport System (C-ITS).
The new technology is the fruit of a joint project by the ministry and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute that began in 2009.
A test operation has been done already at a designated zone in Ochang, North Chungcheong Province.
The ministry expects the system to be commercialized by as early as 2018 for various sectors including not only self-driving cars but also non-military drones and highly accurate smartphones. (Yonhap)
