Korean food firms will take part in an annual international food exhibition in Japan to bolster exports to the neighboring country, the agricultural ministry said Monday.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said 88 local companies will be present at the four-day Foodex Japan 2016 that kicks off on Tuesday in Tokyo.

The Korean businesses have reserved 114 booths to exhibit their food products like kimchi, noodles, cookies and tea.

The Japanese food fair is one of the largest food and beverage fairs in Asia, drawing farm, fisheries and processed food suppliers from all over the world.

The ministry said the event will help the local industry prop up food exports to Japan, which have been on a steady decline since 2013 when they peaked at $210.2 million.

In 2015, Korea's food shipments to its neighbor sank 11.9 percent to $183.3 million, while the country's entire exports of agricultural products slipped 1.2 percent to $6.1 billion. (Yonhap)
