Korean tech giants Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics have been recognized for their excellence in design at this year’s iF Design Award, an annual design competition organized by the International Forum Design Awards.

Samsung and LG picked up a total of 38 and 28 awards, respectively, for their superior design in a range of areas, including product and packaging.

Of the 38 awards, Samsung won one Gold, the highest prize at the event, for its Serif TV, which when seen in profile resembles a capital I in serif font.

Some other prizes include those for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge smartphones, the high-end Chef Collection refrigerator and the AddWash front-load washing machine.

“We are honored to be recognized by the International Forum Design for our excellence in product design,” said Yoon Boo-Keun, CEO of Samsung Electronics and the head of the firm’s corporate design center.

“We will continue to challenge ourselves and develop innovative designs that benefit our consumers based on our deep insights into their needs.”

LG won three Gold prizes -- one for the Gram 15 laptop, which weighs only 980 grams with a 15.6-inch (39.6-centimeter) display, and the other two for a washing machine and a fridge from the firm’s premium Signature home appliance lineup.

LG quoted the panel of judges for the design competition as saying “the slim design of the laptop makes the product stand out, and the laptop is excellent in both design and function.”

The company’s top-notch Signature organic light-emitting diode TV, Signature air purifier and a rollable keyboard dubbed the Rolly were among products that won design prizes.

The iF Design Award is one of the design world’s most prestigious awards, along with the Red Dot Design Award and the International Design Excellence Award.
