A South Korean sailor was released by pirates off the coast of West Africa on Tuesday after being held captive on his vessel, the Foreign Ministry said.

On Thursday (South Korean time), the pirates hijacked a United Arab Emirates-registered tanker in waters near Ivory Coast and took all 18 people on board captive, according to the ministry.

The Nigerian Navy raided the vessel early Saturday, taking 16 of the sailors into custody. The other two were kidnapped by some of the pirates, who fled with them.

Among the sailors were nationals of China, India, Pakistan, Sudan and Ghana.

The tanker was freed early Tuesday at a port in Lagos, Nigeria.

The ministry said it set up a team in Seoul and at the embassies in Ghana, Nigeria and Ivory Coast to ensure the safe return of the South Korean national. (Yonhap)
