The Supreme Court on Thursday returned to a lower court a ruling that sentenced a former judge to three years in prison for taking bribes from a private money lender in return for legal favors.

The 44-year-old, identified only by his surname Choi, was indicted last year over allegations he received some 269 million won ($220,400) from 2009 to 2012, in exchange for helping a notorious loan shark receive reduced sentences for crimes related to drugs and blackmail.

The usurer had multiple trials between 2008 and 2012. He had been acquitted of several drug-related charges during the period.

The Seoul High Court had convicted Choi of taking 169 million won and ordered him to forfeit the money.

The Supreme Court, however, said the other 100 million won should also be regarded as kickbacks Choi received.

Choi quit his job facing the prosecutors' investigation.

It marks the first time in eight years that a sitting judge was charged with bribery. The last time was in 2006, when a Seoul High Court judge faced similar charges. (Yonhap)
