China’s military spending in 2012 was less than one-fifth of that of the U.S., underscoring a large military gap between the two major powers.

The World Military Expenditures and Arms Transfers 2015 report by the U.S. State Department showed that the U.S.’ military spending in the year was tallied at $724 billion, down 5.48 percent from the previous year. Meanwhile, China’s spending was $126 billion, up $7 billion from the year before.

The United Kingdom ranked third in military spending with $60.3 billion, followed by Russia with $49.1 billion, Japan with $54.7 billion, France with $41.4 billion and Saudi Arabia with $48 billion.

South Korea ranked No. 10 with $31.9 billion, up 1.9 percent from the previous year. North Korea spent $3.85 billion - one-eighth of South Korea’s military spending in the year.
