Continuing its forging of orchestral-based, genre-hodgepodge reinterpretations of widely recognized repertoires, the Herald Philharmonic Orchestra will present its final concert of the year on Sunday.

Under the baton of Kim Bong-mee, the Herald Phil’s year-end performance will be held at the Inje Cultural Foundation’s Grand Concert Hall in Gangwon Province.

Looking to intertwine its classical orchestra sounds with elements of old Korean folk, jazz and gugak, the concert will feature a number of special guest performers including popular folk singer Ahn Chi-hwan, jazz vocalist Woongsan, tenor vocalist Ryu Jung-pil and soprano Shin Della, as well as pansori singer Ahn So-eun.

The 40-member chamber orchestra, along with its guest artists, will perform a dynamic range of musical scores, including “Arirang,” “Besame Mucho,” “Pirates of the Caribbean” and one of Chi-hwan’s most representative folk singles, “People are More Beautiful than Flowers.”

Following this performance, the Herald Phil will accompany the locally beloved Canadian pianist Steve Barakatt in his New Year’s concert, performing his 16-movement symphony “Ad Vitam Aeternam” on Jan. 2 at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Seoul.
