Samsung Engineering Co., the plant engineering unit of South Korea's top conglomerate Samsung Group, said Monday that it has received a 649 billion won ($550 million) order to improve a refining plant in Mexico.

Under the deal with Petroleos Mexicanos, Samsung Engineering will upgrade the plant with a capacity of 53,000 barrels of ultra-low sulfur diesel by the end of 2018.

The deal also includes building a new plant in Salamanca, northwest of Mexico City, which produces 38,000 barrels of ULSD by the end of 2018.

Last week, a Samsung Engineering-led consortium bagged an $800 million order to build a petrochemical plant in the United States.

Samsung Engineering has said that it aims to rake in sales of 7.1 trillion won in 2016 along with an operating profit of 228 billion won.

During the third quarter alone, Samsung Engineering logged an operating loss of 1.5 trillion won amid slumping plant orders. (Yonhap)
