Samsung Electronics asked the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday to reduce $548 million in damages it was ordered to pay Apple in a lengthy court battle over allegations that it copied designs of the iPhone.

The appeal came after Samsung agreed earlier this month to pay the total damages, saying it expects to be reimbursed depending on its appeals to the Supreme Court.

In the latest appeal, Samsung is seeking to knock $399 million off the total amount.

"A patented design might be the essential feature of a spoon or rug. But the same is not true of smartphones, which contain countless other features that give them remarkable functionality wholly unrelated to their design," Samsung said in the suit, according to local reports.

Samsung was first found guilty in 2012 of violating Apple's patents and ordered to pay Apple $1.05 billion. But the amount was later lowered to $930 million, and then to the current amount in May this year. (Yonhap)
