Global shipments of display panels are expected to fall about 5 percent on-year in 2015 due to tumbling demand for PCs, with the strong TV segment propping up the market, data showed Tuesday.

According to the data compiled by industry tracker IHS, sales of large-sized display panels are estimated to reach 682 million units this year, compared with 720 million units posted in 2014. The figure excludes panels whose size is 7 inches or smaller.

Industry watchers said the main reason is a continued drop in demand for displays used in PCs, which is the result of the rising popularity of mobile devices.

By segment, sales of PC panels, including those for laptops and tablets, are estimated to decrease 12 percent in 2015 from the previous year, IHS said.

In contrast, shipments of display panels for TVs are projected to rise 7 percent on-year.

Backed by the strong demand for TV panels, the total area of displays shipped is expected to reach 159 million square meters this year, up 5 percent from the 151 million square meters last year.

IHS said the brisk demand for TV panels has contributed to shrugging off concerns of an oversupply. (Yonhap)
