South Korea's business communities mourned the death of former President Kim Young-sam on Sunday, vowing to continue what they called his legacy of economic reforms that they said helped eradicate corruption.

"Former President Kim greatly contributed to the country's fight against corruption, as well as its move toward a more transparent society, by introducing the real-name financial transaction system and the asset disclosure system for public officials," the Federation of Korean Industries  said in a released statement.

The former president died early Sunday at the age of 88.

The FKI said the late president also helped place the country on par with other major economies of the world, noting the country became a member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development during his 1993-1998 presidency.

"While admiring the accomplishments and efforts of late President Kim in transforming the country into a transparent, advanced society, we will do our utmost to help enable our economy to leap once again," it said. (Yonhap)
