The album containing pianist Cho Seong-jin's award-winning performance at this year's Chopin Competition has sold out in a matter of days, the album's distributor said Friday.

The 21-year-old prodigy became the first South Korean to win the world's top piano competition last month in Poland.

All 50,000 copies of his live album available in South Korea were sold out Thursday, six days after it was released worldwide by the prestigious classical music label Deutsche Grammophon, Universal Music said.

The first batch of 30,000 copies were sold over the weekend through both online and offline channels, with the second batch of 20,000 flying off the shelves in four days.

The distributor said it has ordered 50,000 more copies, which are also expected to be gone by the end of the year.

It is extremely rare for a classical music album to sell more than 10,000 copies in South Korea.

"We expect to sell a total of about 100,000 copies by early next year," a Universal Music official said. "Even those who don't normally listen to classical music are looking for the album." (Yonhap)
