Ssangyong Motor Co., the local unit of Indian auto conglomerate Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., said Monday that its sales shot up 16.3 percent on-year in October as soaring sales at home helped offset plunging exports.

Ssangyong Motor sold 13,359 units last month, up from the previous month's 11,490 units, the company said in a press release. The figures do not include complete knockdown kits that are assembled abroad.

Overseas shipments nosedived 44.5 percent to 3,351 units over the cited period.

On its home turf, however, its sales surged 83.5 percent on-year to 10,008 units due mainly to the continued popularity of its Tivoli crossover SUV.

Sales of the Tivoli have totaled 34,885 units since its launch in January.

Cumulative sales during the January-September period came to 117,010 units, down 0.1 percent from the previous year, according to Ssangyong. (Yonhap)
