South Korea said Monday it wants the country's firms to participate in Jamaica's major infrastructure projects.

The Foreign Ministry plans to request the Jamaican government's support during a rare policy consultation meeting to be held in Kingston, the capital of the Caribbean nation, later this week.

The two sides are scheduled to hold their first policy coordination meeting in eight years Tuesday.

"We plan to request the Jamaican government's interest and cooperation so that South Korean companies with world-class technology and construction experience can expand their opportunities to business in connection with its energy (electricity), airport modernization and logistical hub projects," the ministry said.

Jamaica has been pushing for the Vision 2030 national development program.

Also to be discussed are trade and economic ties, exchange of high-level officials, cooperation on global affairs and regional security conditions, it added.

South Korea will be represented by Park Sang-hoon, director general of the ministry's Central and South American bureau, and his counterpart will be Joy Wheeler, the under secretary for bilateral and regional affairs.

South Korea and Jamaica established their diplomatic ties in 1962. The two have since closely cooperated at the U.N. and on the international stage. (Yonhap)
