Volvo, Ford, FCA to recall 10,197 cars in S. Korea

Volvo, Ford and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will recall 10,197 cars sold in South Korea for safety-related mechanical defects, the transportation ministry said Monday.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, a combined 3,877 S80, S60, XC90, XC70 and V70 models made by the Swedish carmaker have problems with the upper part of the fuel pump section that can cause an oil leak and fire.

The problem involves cars made from May 24, 2000 through Feb. 4, 2005.

The ministry said Ford will recall six models for problems with fuel line O-rings that can start a fire and faulty door latches.

Some Ford vehicles have been found to have problems in the fuel tank insulation and steering columns that can make cars unsafe for driving.

The Mondeo, Fusion, MKZ, MKS, Mustang and Taurus made between Jan. 19, 2011 through July 27, 2015 may have one or two faults depending on the model.

In regards to FCA, models like the 300C made between July 14, 2004 and May 6, 2010 may be plagued with faulty wiring in the ignition switch assembly. This problem can cause the ignition to turn off while the car is being driven.

Besides the 300C, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Commander and Grand Voyager will require repairs.

The ministry said Volvo and Ford owners will be able to get their cars serviced starting this week at designated repair shops, while Jeep and Chrysler owners can visit local service centers starting Thursday.

In addition to the three carmakers, the ministry said Hyundai Motor, Kawasaki, Mercedes-Benz and Daimler Trucks will recall 71 vehicles for manufacturing defects.

It said 22 Hyundai Grand Starex made between Sept. 4 and Sept. 9 of this year had problems with the front passenger side airbags that may not deploy in the event of a collision.

With Kawasaki, the ministry said 26 Vulcan 1700 Voyager motorcycles have been found to have wiring problems that can cause the ignition to turn off while on the move. It said the bikes affected were made between Feb. 2, 2009 and March 20 of this year.

For Mercedes-Benz, 18 passenger cars encompassing seven models have timing belt tensioner gasket defects which can lead to a fire.

The cars affected that include the C220 Blutec and E250 Bluetec, made between June 4, 2012 and Feb. 16, 2015.

The ministry said Daimler's five truck made from July 3, 2014 to Jan. 30 of this year have electrical wiring issues that can cause the vehicles to lose power.

Hyundai and Kawasaki will start making repairs starting Monday, with Mercedes-Benz and Daimler to deal with the faulty parts from Thursday onwards. (Yonhap)
