LG Display Co., South Korea's major flat panel maker, has become the leader in global TV panel shipments this year thanks mainly to firm demand from TV set makers, a report showed Thursday.
LG Display shipped a total of 41.7 million TV panels in the first nine months of the year, accounting for 22.9 percent of the market share, according to the latest report by market tracker WitsView.
That has made LG Display the top seller of TV panels in the world, the report said, adding that LG will likely stay ahead of its rivals for the year, with the annual shipment expected to reach 55 million units in 2015.
Innolux, a Taiwanese display maker, came in second with a cumulative 39 million units as of the end of the third quarter, up 21.4 percent from a year earlier.
The report said that demand for TV sets is picking up in the second half, with many TV manufacturers ramping up their output of large-screen TVs in their premium lineups.
Notably, LG Display has strengthened its partnership with top Chinese TV makers, as well as its main client LG Electronics Inc., its bigger affiliate, the report said.
In contrast, Samsung Display Co., LG Display's home rival, lost its top spot to LG and fell to third place, as its panel supplies to Samsung Electronics Co. sharply decreased to 38.7 million units in the cited period, according to the report. (Yonhap)
