KHNP CEO to head global nuclear body

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power president and CEO Cho Suk assumed charge Tuesday as the president of the World Association of Nuclear Operators in Toronto, Canada.

Cho will lead the organization with the goal “to maximize the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants worldwide by working together to assess, benchmark and improve performance through mutual support, exchange of information and emulation of best practice” for the next two years.

“In order to accomplish the goal of mankind to secure low carbon energy sources, we must pursue shared growth with renewable energy, such as solar and wind power. I hope to reinforce the research for establishing this cooperation model,” Cho said during his inaugural speech on the day.

He also pledged to create programs for the members to exchange experiences in power plant construction and commission, while designing measures for “mutual assistance in nuclear power safety per region” with a focus on practical and detailed safety enhancement in conjunction with the activities of the regional centers.

WANO was established in 1989 to reinforce nuclear power safety. It has 126 members from 35 countries and holds a biennial general congress.
