The blood reserves for type B and AB were the strongest in the country with type O being the least well-stocked, the Korean Red Cross said Tuesday.

Based on the statistics gathered by the Red Cross over the past three years of blood reserves from donors, it was shown that type B had enough reserves to last 7.7 days as of August this year.

It was followed by type AB with 6.6 days, A with 5.4 days and O with 4.2 days.

The number of days refer to the period that the blood reserves can supply medical facilities. It is calculated by dividing the total amount of reserved blood (per type) at 15 blood banks in the country with the average anticipated daily consumption for the respective year.

The same trend was seen last year with 8.6 days’ worth for type B, 7.4 days for AB, 5.8 days for A and 4.8 days for O.

“The shelf-life of type B tends to be longer because the amount of blood being donated is higher than the demand, while it is the opposite for type O,” a Red Cross official said.

With a rise in transplant operations at hospitals, there are an increasing number of surgeries that involve different blood types which leads to higher demand for type O and AB types of plasma, the official explained.

The Red Cross said it continues to work on maintaining the safe level of blood reserves that is over five days and under nine days.
