South Korea's telecom authority said Wednesday it plans to allow foreign visitors to the country to open a mobile phone account more quickly.

Starting Thursday, foreigners will be permitted to get a mobile phone number at airports by submitting only their passports, the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning said.

Currently, foreign visitors have to wait for at least a day for their immigration records to be verified to register a new number.

"Information on foreign visitors is registered automatically upon arrival in South Korea, so they will be able to open their local mobile accounts more quickly," the ministry said. (Yonhap)
