South Korean panel makers expanded their presence in the global market for mid-sized displays in the second quarter, data showed Thursday, while other global rivals lost ground.

Samsung Display Co. accounted for 25 percent of the mid-sized display market, mostly for smartphones, in the April-June period, up 1.3 percentage points from a quarter earlier, the data compiled by industry tracker DisplaySearch showed.

LG Display Co., Samsung's smaller local rival, held a market share of 14.5 percent in the second quarter, also up from 12.8 percent posted in the previous quarter, according to the data.

Other foreign rivals, meanwhile, shed their market presence in the second quarter.

Japan Display Inc. held a comparable 15.4 percent, down 1.4 percentage points over the cited period. Sharp Corp. carved out a 9.7 percent market share in the second quarter, down 1.4 percentage points on-quarter.

The global market for the segment came to $10.23 billion won in the second quarter, down 1.4 percent from three months earlier. (Yonhap)
