South Korea must make the largest reduction rate in greenhouse emissions from the business-as-usual (BAU) levels by 2030 among major countries, a report by the Bloomberg New Energy Finance showed.

Earlier in June, South Korea had set its 2030 target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 37 percent from BAU levels, raised from its earlier plan for a 15-30 percent cut.

The BNEF said it recalculated the required cut by comparing each country’s goal based on uniform standards from 2012 to 2030, in order to make a fairer comparison as the existing reduction targets are based on each country’s own methods.

The analysis showed that Korea had the highest target of 28 percent, compared to Mexico’s 21 percent, Canada’s 11 percent, the U.S.’ 8 percent, Australia’s 7 percent and Japan’s 3 percent. It added that based on the new calculation, the EU, China and Russia would actually see a rise in anticipated emissions.
