A South Korean engineer has been appointed as the new chief of the International Federation of Consulting Engineers, marking the first time for an Asian to head the global organization.

Lee Jae-wan, the chairman of the Korea Engineering & Consulting Association in South Korea, was inaugurated as the 31st president of the FIDIC in Dubai earlier in the day along with some 1,000 FIDIC members from 90 countries attending.

FIDIC is a federation consisting of engineering groups from 101 countries with some 65,000 related firms across the world as members.

The 61-year-old engineer will lead the Geneva-based federation until September 2017, succeeding former FIDIC president Pablo Bueno from Spain. Lee has been an executive committee member at the organization since 2009 and has been serving as the vice president.

The latest appointment marks the first time for an engineer with an Asian background to be elected as the president of the federation since its foundation in 1915. (Yonhap)
