에콰도르판 '세실'…재규어 도륙 사냥꾼 징역 6개월

에콰도르의 야생 보호 동물인 재규어를 죽인 사냥꾼이 징역 6개월형을 선고받았다.

에콰도르의 아마존 정글인 나포 지역에서 서식하는 재규어 한 마리를 총으로 쏴죽인 뒤 페이스북에 사진을 올린 루이스 알프레도 오라는 남성에게 이러한 처벌이 내려졌다고 엘 코메르시오 등 중남미 언론들이 현지 환경부의 발표를 인용해 12일(현지시간) 보도했다.

이 남성은 죽인 재규어의 가죽을 벗겨 내 집에 보관하고 있다가 에콰도르 환경부에 압수당했다.

환경부는 애초 이 남성에 대한 1심 재판에서 10일의 구류형이 선고되자 처벌이 약하다고 항소해 이러한 판결을 받아냈다.

에콰도르는 2008년 법을 제정해 멸종 위기인 재규어와 콘도르를 죽인 사람에게 최고 징역 6개월의 형벌을 내리는 법을 제정한 바 있다.

짐바브웨의 '국민 사자' 세실을 도륙한 미국 치과의사가 세계적으로 손가락질을 받았지만 본국으로 돌아가 직장으로 복귀한 가운데 에콰도르 환경단체 등은 이번 일이 동물 보호와 관련해 역사적인 판례가 될 것이라고 평가했다. (연합)

QUITO, Ecuador -- Ecuador's environment ministry says a man who killed a jaguar and posted photos of the corpse on Facebook has been sentenced to six months in prison for killing a member of an endangered species.

The ministry said in a statement Friday that the man was initially sentenced to 10 days in jail for the 2012 slaying in the Amazon jungle province of Napo but the ministry appealed and won the case. It identified the man only as Luis Alfredo O.

It called the verdict "a historical precedent in environmental matters."

Ecuador's 2008 constitution established the six-month prison sentence and killers of other endangered species including the condor have received it. (AP)
