South Korea will provide Yemen with $500,000 in additional assistance as it suffers a deepening humanitarian crisis caused by a drawn-out civil war, the Foreign Ministry said Friday.

The aid will be delivered through the United Nation's World Food Programme. In April, South Korea also offered $500,000 to help the Yemeni people.

About 80 percent of the 2.5 million people in the Arab country are in need of aid, according to the U.N., due to months of internal fighting and a blockade by a Saudi-led coalition.

The number of those killed in the conflict rose from 519 in April to 4,513 at the end of August, with more than 1.4 million others displaced.

Many schools, hospitals, bridges and other public facilities have been destroyed.

The U.N. Office for the Coordination for Humanitarian Affairs declared its highest-level humanitarian emergency there in July. (Yonhap)
