BERLIN/SEOUL -- LG Display chief executive Han Sang-beom envisioned the future display industry in his opening speech at the 2015 IFA electronics trade show, introducing the application of futuristic display technologies, including the paper-thin and transparent displays made of organic light-emitting diodes.

In his speech under the theme of “How displays will change our lives,” he elaborated on life in an era of displays. “Through displays, we share information. Through displays, we communicate. Through displays, we look into the future and dream about it,” Han said.

The OLED, which has a high level of flexibility and transparency in its nature, is expected to be deployed in a number of applications from wearables to home furnishings down the road.

At this year’s IFA, held in Berlin from Friday through next Wednesday, LG Display will showcase a 111-inch double-sided OLED display, made of three UHD OLED displays, and a 55-inch double-sided commercial display with its thickness standing at 5.3mm and weight at 12kg.

A 55-inch OLED wallpaper display, which is 1mm thick and uses a magnetic mat on the back, is expected to attract visitors at the event. The OLED wallpaper can be easily attached to and removed from walls.

The LG Display CEO with 30 years of experience in the chip and display sectors is credited with propelling the LG Group affiliate into the top echelons of the global display market.

LG Display has been stepping up efforts to grow the OLED business by rolling out OLED displays for TVs and electronics devices for years while other display-makers are testing the water.

The company recently decided to make a further investment of 10 trillion won ($8.38 billion) in the OLED business.

The company is the world’s largest thin-film transistor liquid crystal display panel manufacturer with a market share of around 24 percent in 2014.
