South Korea's top tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. unveiled a device on Wednesday that connects to the Internet and home appliances to provide a better environment for sleeping, in its latest effort to diversify its product lineup amid ailing handset sales.
  

The device, dubbed SLEEPsense, can analyze movement, heartbeat and respiration during users' sleep and connects to various home electronics, such as TVs and air conditioners, to provide an optimized sleep environment, Samsung said.
  

For example, Samsung's smart TVs turn off if SLEEPsense signals a user has fallen asleep, while the air conditioner linked to the Internet adjusts the room temperature.
  

The results can be shared with other members of users' family through smartphones, making it possible to monitor the health of elderly parents on a real-time basis, it added.
  

The SLEEPsense, which the company said will be available this year, is the latest device in Samsung's Internet-of-Things lineup.
  

IoT is a concept in which all tangible objects are connected to the Internet and can identify themselves to other devices to exchange necessary data for improved efficiency and convenience.
 

Samsung has been working to tap deeper into the IoT segment through its electronics equipped with smart features, in a bid to build a new growth engine as its traditional mainstay handset business has remained sluggish over past quarters. (Yonhap)
